Surviving (and thriving) on $12,000 a year

This is an incredible article. Ms. Donna Freedman a living-alone-divorcee is planning on living on $12,084 and going to school full time in 2007. Here is how she plans to accomplish that.

  • It's not what I have, but how much of it I can keep. (Save)
  • How can I get it free, or almost free? (coupons...)
  • Enough is as good as a feast. (Eat cheap and healthy)
  • Every day is casual Friday! (Clothing does not make the man)
  • Announce my intentions. (Pray)

I am so not impressed. I

I am so not impressed. I lived on $12K/year when I was in school, only I wasn't getting an alimony check or grants - I was having to spend money on clothes to wear to work and gas to get there. Cutting coupons isn't exactly feasible when you're studying in the breakroom at work during your lunch hour. She makes it all sound so desperate, but then again, she's going for luxuries I did not have before I graduated, like health insurance, dental work, and her car's "60,000 mile check-up". What a drama queen. Why does her car insurance cost $1200 per year? Renter's and life insurance? And she's not even living on a mere $12,000 per year. That is what she makes from alimony and grants, but she babysits. And takes her laundry.

Yeah, I know, I'm ranting, but this article just annoys me.
